With cupcakes unfairly getting all of the attention and icing in the past few years, it was only a matter of time until other baked goods rebelled and did something truly attention grabbing to steal the spotlight. Enter stage left the ‘Bonchaz’, an oven-baked milk bun with a cushiony interior, topped with a crisp, cookie-like crust.
The hand-stuffed Bonchaz is a multi-cultural pastry partnership between the Mexican Conchas bun, the Brioche French bun, and the Chinese bun, and is offered in five tantalizing flavours: original with sea salt, banana walnut, chocolate truffle, apple cinnamon and matcha green tea, all with a hint of fresh ground coffee. Besides the Bonchaz, they offer a selection of hearty soups and sandwiches, French press coffees and organic teas.
Bonchaz opened a storefront location a few months ago, after starting a feeding frenzy every weekend at the Farmer’s Market in Vancouver. The downtown location has been stopping passerby in their tracks ever since, luring them in with the aroma of coffee buns that are "Baked Before Your Eyes." Be warned: there are tales told of Bonchaz buyers who go home with ten and eat all in a single sitting.
