The Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society (GVFBS) is a non-profit organization that has been providing food and assistance to those in need since 1982. The GVFBS serves up to 25,000 people weekly, mainly the working poor, new immigrants, single parents and elderly on fixed incomes.
Food is collected, sorted and inventoried at the GVFBS warehouse, then distributed through 15 food depots and over 100 community agencies located in Vancouver‚ Burnaby‚ New Westminster and the North Shore.
One of the initiatives of the GVFBS is the Community Angel Food Runners program, through which the organization receives quality food donated from restaurants, hotels, cafeterias and schools. The food is then delivered to meal-providing agencies. The Food Runners program saves 725,000 lbs. of food yearly and creates 1.25 million meals for people in need.
